From the Get-Go

SEO Tips to Remember When Setting up your Site

1.) Research Keywords: Don’t underestimate the strategy of keywords you pick for your each page. Find 2-5 keywords or keyword phrases to optimize for and concentrate primarily on those. When beginning your research, it’s imperative to take into consideration the following factors:
a.) search traffic
b.) difficulty of that specific vertical
c.) relevance to the page
d.) competition

Here are some examples of tools that will help you find the information about the above factors:

2.) Analyze Your Vertical: SEO metrics are not universal – don’t listen to the generalized suggestions that tell you to keep your body keyword density within a set number, or meta-tags a certain length. Look at what the top positions in the search engines are doing, duplicate their strengths and exploit their weaknesses. This tool will help you analyze the top search results based on specific keywords: http://www.ranks.nl/tools/spider.html. This will help you see who is linking to them: http://www.iwebtool.com/backlink_checker.

3.) Naming Files: File naming can help your SEO efforts as well. Name your images and files something related to your keywords. Your URL structure should be designed using the same mentality. Use hyphens to separate words in the URL.

4.) Creating Content: Make sure you have plenty of content on your page and that it’s not hidden or tucked away at the bottom left-hand corner.

5.) Internal Links: Use your internal links to your advantage. Use your keywords as anchor text. Make sure that they are written in a way that is readable to the search engines. Go back and check to prevent dead links with this: http://validator.w3.org/checklink

5.) Clean Your Code: Make sure your code is readable by the search engine spiders. After you’ve written everything, run your file or page through a tool like these to make sure it’s clean, readable and optimized:

6.) Redirects: Make sure that when you are using redirects (such as from the non-www version to the www-version of your index page) that you are using permanent 301-redirects.

7.) Pages to Remember: There are 3 files to remember including when you finally launch your site that can only help in either your SEO efforts or keeping visitors on your page:

a.) site map – create a text linked site map with all of your pages listed to ensure that all pages will be indexed. This also provides an easy way for users to navigate through your site if they are looking for something specific.

b.) custom 404 page – users are more likely to return to a page on your site if they see a customized error page with alternative pages listed for them to visit.

c.) robots.txt file – this will instruct spiders (on an individual level if necessary) to crawl the page, and avoid any pages you don’t want them to crawl.

8.) Submit: Submit your site to the search engines, directories and related sites that may link to you. Create a Google Sitemap to speed up the process, and to keep them updated on any changes you may make to your site in the future.

9.) Build Link Popularity: The process of obtaining quality inbound links is never-ending – start now! Write valuable articles that you can submit to free content syndication sites or that people that are likely to link to. Keep up on blogs and discussion forums that are industry related that will keep you in the loop, reveal partnership opportunities, and create avenues for inbound links.

10.) Keep Track of Changes: Verticals are constantly changing. New competitors arise. Search engines change what they view as valuable. Keep track of rankings for your keywords on a frequent, consistent basis. Make sure you have a way to reverse your changes if they turn out to be harmful to your rankings. Finally, kneel down by your bed and say a prayer to God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha or Satan, depending on your personal beliefs.
