Google Now Offering Gmail to Everyone
Google officially announced on Wednesday that its free email service is now available to anyone that wants it.
From the time it was launched in April of 2004 up until now, Gmail accounts were available by invitation only. So if you didn’t know anyone that already had Gmail service, there really wasn’t much you could do. From here on out that will no longer be the case.
Google won't say just how many G-mail users it has racked up over the past 3 years, but statistical data compiled by the research firm comScore indicates that Google has now surpassed AOL to become the world's third largest e-mail service provider behind longtime leaders Yahoo and Microsoft.
In addition to sending and receiving emails, Gmail also offers users the ability to chat live with fellow Gmail users, as well as a POP mail forwarding feature that permits desktop mail clients like Outlook to receive Gmail messages. Gmail also offers easy access to other popular Google features such as Google Maps.
The free version Gmail currently offers its users 2.8 gigabytes of space. Though this is more than enough space for the average Gmail user, Google also says that it will begin selling additional storage capacity as well for those that need it.
Google has also lifted the invitation-only restriction on Gmail in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Brazil.
