Conclusion to Google’s Duplicate - Omitted Pages Posts
As all the people that read this blog know, I have been testing pages to see if what Google see’s as duplicate content.
Here is what I have found:
1. Google treats the title and description tags differently than the content on the page. If the title and description tags are the same, Google will place those pages into “Omitted” results EVEN IF the content is completely different.
2. If your title and description tags are different and the page is still in “Omitted” results, then you need to look at the copy on the page. I have not seen a set number published and it may actually vary based on the verticle, but I would recommend at least 30 to 50% of the content be different on each page.
For those still learning about this and would like to see if their site has these issues, here is how you find your “Omitted” results.
In Google, type
site:yourdomain.com replace “yourdomain” with your actual site. Do not use “www”
Then go all the way to the end number and on the last page you see,
In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 1 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.
If you click on that link, you will see a lot more pages for your site and will be able to see which pages have the duplicate title and description tags. To see which pages are duplicate content, you can use http://www.copyscape.com/
