Keyword Density Defined

Often measured as a percentage or ratio, keyword density is the number of times a keyword appears on a page versus the total number of words on that page. For example, if your keyword occurs 5 times on a 100-word page your keyword density would be 5%.

Keyword density is important because it is a way for search engines to measure the relevance of a page, and ultimately determine where it will rank in the search results.

Where is keyword density optimization most important?

What is a good keyword density measurement?

Keyword density should be high enough so that the keyword is obviously the main focus of your page, but not so high that you risk being penalized for keyword stuffing. Search engines often put a cap on this relevancy measurement to prevent webmasters from spamming a website for rankings. Most experts agree that 4-8% is a good percentage for keyword density; however, this will vary depending on the ranking competition for that particular term.
