Anchor Text: Watch Out for Wasted Opportunities!

Anchor text is the text used to link one web page to another. Choosing your anchor text wisely is a powerful way to boost your rankings for an important keyword. Search engines see anchor text as a good way to determine the relevancy of the page it is linking to; for this reason, it is weighted highly in search engine algorithms.

Be sure you’re not wasting opportunities like this on your site. Example: If I wanted a page to rank better for “banana pudding,” linking to that page would help increase my relevancy, but not if the anchor text is “why Jell-O rocks”—or worse…“click here.”

This goes for external linking as well. Try to get your link partners to use well-chosen terms when they link to you—you can even provide them with suggested anchor text.
